You may claim assistance to help cover funeral costs within one year of the death of your family member. After one year, there is no longer a legal basis for granting you the benefit.

What is the special form of assistance to help cover funeral costs and who is it intended for?
The special form of financial assistance to help cover funeral costs is intended for socially vulnerable persons with recognised temporary protection status.
It is intended for those whose financial situation may worsen or who may experience financial hardship as a result of the death of a family member and the associated costs.
What amount of funeral grant am I entitled to and how is it granted?
The funeral grant is provided as a one-off financial assistance payment in the amount of twice the basic minimum income, but not exceeding the actual funeral costs.
The minimum income amount is adjusted in accordance with the cost of living in Slovenia. The current amount of the minimum income can be checked on the GOV.si website.
What conditions must I meet to claim assistance to help cover funeral costs?
You are eligible for assistance to help cover funeral costs if you meet the following conditions:
- you have been granted temporary protection status in the Republic of Slovenia;
- your deceased family member had the temporary protection status in the Republic of Slovenia at the time of death;
- on the date of your family member’s death, you were entitled to the allowance or financial assistance;
- you arranged the funeral of the person granted temporary protection in the Republic of Slovenia;
- no more than one year has passed since the death of your family member.
Who is considered a family member of the deceased person when claiming assistance to help cover funeral costs?
For the purpose of claiming assistance to help cover funeral costs, the following persons are considered family members of the deceased:
- the spouse of the person granted temporary protection, a cohabiting partner or a partner from another legally recognised form of partnership; in the case of a polygamous relationship, only one person is considered a family member, namely the person designated by the person granted temporary protection;
- minor children of the person granted temporary protection or of the person referred to in the preceding point, provided they are unmarried, regardless of whether they were born within or outside marriage or were adopted;
- a child of the person granted temporary protection born in the Republic of Slovenia;
- the father, mother or another adult responsible for the person granted temporary protection, if the person granted temporary protection is a minor and unmarried;
- a minor sibling of the person granted temporary protection, provided they are unmarried;
- another relative of the person granted temporary protection, provided that a domestic community exists between them which is substantially comparable to a primary family or performs the same function as a family, meaning in particular genuine family ties between its members, physical care, supervision and protection, emotional support and financial dependence.

How does the procedure for claiming the death benefit work?
- Fill in the Application for Exercising the Right to the Special Form of Financial Assistance Following the Death of a Family Member and the Special Form of Financial Assistance to Help Cover Funeral, and select point 2 in Chapter III.
- Submit the required documentation to the Government Office for the Support and Integration of Migrants.
- The Office will issue you a decision confirming your entitlement to assistance to help cover funeral costs.

- in person at the Government Office for the Support and Integration of Migrants, Dunajska cesta 167, 1000 Ljubljana, or Makedonska ulica 33, Maribor, during office hours;
- by post to: Government Office for the Support and Integration of Migrants, Cesta v Gorice 15, 1000 Ljubljana.
How is financial assistance to cover funeral costs paid?
If you arranged the funeral of your family member, the funeral grant will be paid into your bank account.
